Thursday evenings from 7:30pm - 9:30pm, at the West Vancouver Community Centre, in the Music Hall, 2121 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, B.C. We generally follow the school calendar, but do practice through the School Break. See map on our Contact Us page.
No. You can join us no matter where you live. Currently, we have members who reside in North Vancouver (as far out as Deep Cove), West Vancouver, Squamish and Vancouver.
We are an intermediate level adult band with some good players who are happy to help. So, if you have (or had) played at least one year with a high school/community band OR have taken private lessons, are a good team-player, and enjoy practicing/performing with other musicians...then we have a place for you.
That doesn't matter; many of our members are "comeback players". If you played once, then you can do it again! It will just take some time and patience on your part. There are first, second, and third parts for most scores and you can start playing at the level that makes most sense for you. The fingers will remember and the chops will come back!
Drop us an e-mail and we can help refer you to someone who can help you get started on your instrument. There are many fine teachers who routinely work with adults starting on a new instrument.
Yes, visit one or two of our regular Thursday practices. Bring your own instrument, unless you would like to play bass drum! (It is a good idea to send an e-mail to us, at westvanpopsband@gmail.com in advance, to make sure the practice is not cancelled for some reason, such as summer/winter break, and so we can properly welcome you). Some people just like to sit in and get a feel for the group.
Many of our members holiday throughout our playing season. You also don't have to practice at home (but don't tell Tak, our Conductor, we said so, as he is convinced practice is going on all the time!). That said, the more familiar you are with the music and your instrument, the easier it becomes!
Technically, we are a wind ensemble - brass, woodwinds, and percussion. Although we don't have places for violins, violas and cellos, string bass (or even electric bass) has a place, and would be welcome.
Others, including alto and tenor saxes, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, euphoniums and percussionists (especially bell players!) have a home with us as well.
Rarer instruments such as the oboe, bass clarinet, alto clarinet, French horn, trombone and tuba are especially needed and welcome!
If you don't have an instrument, we can assist you in your search for a rental or a purchase. Drop us an e-mail at westvanpopsband@gmail.com
There is a $200.00 annual membership fee, which covers from September to June.
